Fishermen fishing illegally in the waters around Maleri Island. Scenes like these are now becoming rare around the Maleri islands and water plants are on the recovery.

Since most of the sand-dwelling cichlids have already disappeared in the populated areas, fishermen are now using small-meshed gill nets and fish for the small mbuna in the rocky habitats. When nets are found they are confiscated and handed over to the Park authorities.
